'Points' Empty 'Points'

What the heck are they? I see they roughly correlate to forum posts, but there are some people with the same (Mr. Pornstar) and some people with more (Me, Evry). Are they an extension of the reputation system, or something else entirely?

I think the points have different values on threads. For example you get more points in the government sections?

Maybe it has something to do with the + and - signs over to the right.
