Lesson 1. History Defined Empty Lesson 1. History Defined

Before we study History, we first have to know what is history?

Well, what is history?

History is the study of the past, base on supporting sources and evidences. One can say that it is a reconstruction of the past.

History is subjective, it is rarely objective. Why? Evidences, or sources, are mute witness to history. They do not speak for themselves. Who makes them "speak" is the historian, or us. We therefore interpret it base on our own perspectives and biases.

An artifact (e.g. documents and shards, etc.) is called a subject. This is then given some meaning and that meaning is given some use.

For example, a skull found in a cave somewhere distant. We then say that this certain primitive man is our people's ancestor, thus reinforcing our bond and claim to this land.

A USABLE PAST

In order for our history to be relevant it has to be useful. According to Renato Constantino, a noted Filipino Historian, a usable past is something the people can look at and refer to in order to understand the present situation.

These are rather simple definitions and simple lessons to start our semester. Any questions?

Clarifications and corrections are most welcome. Even criticisms

History is past prophecy. Prophecy is future history. Therefore, history and prophecy are the same. XD

hmmm, that's a nice idea.
But the past is something we create base on sources that actually support it. The future is something distant, and so is the past.

That's a nice idea. :?:
